Tallangatta is a small town in north-eastern Victoria that was first surveyed in 1871. Its name is derived from the indigenous Australian word 'Talgarno', meaning 'mountain of fire'. The town has a rich history and has undergone many changes over the years.

One of the major events in Tallangatta's history was the construction of the Hume Dam, which began in 1919. The dam was built to provide water for irrigation and hydroelectric power, and it transformed the land and people's lives. Many of the surrounding towns were relocated to higher ground to make way for the dam and its associated infrastructure.

Tallangatta was one of the towns that had to be moved, and in 1955, the entire town was relocated to its current site, several kilometers away from the old town. The move was a massive undertaking, with many of the town's buildings, including the post office, hotels, and churches, being dismantled and rebuilt in the new location. The relocation took several years to complete, and during that time, residents had to live in temporary accommodation and make do with limited facilities.

The relocation of Tallangatta was a significant event in the town's history, and it has shaped the community's identity. The town today is proud of its resilience and the way in which it came together to rebuild a new, better Tallangatta.

Another important event in Tallangatta's history was the bushfires of 2003, which devastated the town and surrounding areas. The fires destroyed many homes and buildings, including the Tallangatta Hotel, which was a popular local meeting place. Despite this tragedy, the community rallied together to rebuild and recover. The hotel was rebuilt, and the town has since gone from strength to strength.

Tallangatta's history is also closely tied to the indigenous people who have lived in the area for thousands of years. The local Dhudhuroa people have a deep connection to the land and mountains, and their culture and stories are woven into the town's history.

Today, Tallangatta is a thriving community with a rich cultural heritage. Its historic buildings, including the post office, courthouse, and Anglican and Catholic churches, are reminders of the town's past, while newer facilities, such as the Tallangatta Community Centre, provide modern amenities for residents and visitors.

Tallangatta's history is a testament to the resilience and determination of its people, who have faced numerous challenges but have always managed to overcome them. The town's sense of community and pride in its history are evident, and visitors are always welcomed with open arms.
